About Birmingham: city quarters, canals and local life

Get to know Birmingham through its central landmarks, the Jewellery Quarter, Digbeth and the neighbourhoods where everyday businesses work.

A centre with several different characters

Birmingham’s central streets connect civic buildings, shopping, offices and cultural venues, but the city makes more sense when explored a quarter at a time. Victoria Square and the Council House provide a familiar civic setting; nearby Centenary Square and the canals offer a different introduction.

Choose a starting point around what you want to do. A visit to the Jewellery Quarter and an evening in Digbeth are different outings, even though both form part of central Birmingham.

Look at the city’s working neighbourhoods

Hall Green, Kings Heath, Cotteridge, Kings Norton, Erdington, Great Barr and other neighbourhoods have shops, trades and services used in everyday life. A useful city directory should make those businesses understandable alongside central restaurants and attractions.

Check the actual base on each listing. A contractor covering Birmingham may visit customers across a wide area without keeping a public office in every neighbourhood.

Keep the wider West Midlands clear

Birmingham is one part of the West Midlands, rather than a name for every nearby town. Solihull and the Black Country have their own places and councils. Rowley Regis, Castle Bromwich and Cofton Hackett should be described by their real locations when they appear in a Birmingham-area search.

Those places each have their own local centres and identities. The directory includes relevant nearby services while keeping their actual bases visible, helping you find a business in the city or one convenient to your part of the wider area.

Plan around the practical journey

Birmingham is served by several rail stations and local transport routes. Check the station and entrance that actually suits your destination, rather than assuming every central place is beside New Street.

If driving, check official Clean Air Zone requirements for your vehicle before travelling. Ask individual venues about access, parking and bookings; our other guides help narrow down things to do, shopping areas and useful local contacts.
